Who teaches tuition?

Lessons are lead by our Pipe Majot Hamish Cotton, an experienced bagpipe teacher with 30 years of teaching experiences.

Hamish Cotton is a prominent figure in the Western Australian and New Zealand pipe band communities, currently serving as the Pipe Major of the Coastal Scottish Pipe Band in Perth, Western Australia.

Profile and Career Highlights

  • Current Role: Hamish Cotton is the Director of the Perth Piping Centre, and lead Piping teacher. Hamish also acts as the Pipe Major for the Coastal Scottish Pipe Band, which fields two competition groups Grade 3 and grade 4.

  • Early Career (New Zealand): He began learning pipes at age 8 in New Zealand and played in his first national championships with the Feilding & Districts band at age 12.

  • WA Police Pipe Band (WAPOL): He moved to Western Australia in 1999 to join the WAPOL Pipe Band as a full-time piper. His time with the band included competitions in the USA and the 2003 World Pipe Band Championships.

  • International Performances: Hamish is a current member of the Royal Edinburgh Military Tattoo Pipes and Drums, having completed performances at the 2025 Edinburgh Tattoo (Edinburgh, Scotland), Brisbane Australia, and Auckland New Zealand.

  • Since 2015 Hamish has regularly played as a guest member of Auckland & District Pipe band New Zealand (Grade 1).

    As a guest player with WAPOL from 2007-2014, he performed in Russia at the Kremlin Zoria event and participated in two Australian Grade 1 Championship wins. He also toured Ireland with the Grade 1 New Zealand Police Band in 2005 competing at a number of competitions including the European Championships.

  • Tutoring: Hamish has taken on a significant tutoring role, leading the Coastal Scottish pipe band in competition and offering private lessons through the Perth Piping Centre.

    Hamish has been successfully in guiding pipers from the elementary level through to competing at the Grade 1 level for over 30 years.

    He is passionate about promoting piping and drumming in Western Australia.

He is an active advocate for the pipe band community and has been involved in promoting events like the Australian Pipe Band Championships.

The Perth Piping Centre has additional teaching support by experienced pipers and drummers providing expert lessons tailored to your skill level.
